Muriel Lee
About The Artist
Muriel is a songwriter who loves writing and developing stories as songs. She writes lyrics using her own life as a springboard for creating songs that reflect our universal experiences. Her songs are rich in texture with style reminiscent of roots and folk traditions.
Background and Experience
Muriel was raised in Denver, Colorado, by parents who loved to dance. The Trocadero Ballroom at Elitch Gardens provided her with a place to enjoy big band jazz as she watched her parents stepping out to the sounds of Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. A child of the 60s, she experienced a range of music as roots and folk music evolved into rock and roll. She loved it all. She has performed as a folk singer, a lead singer in a rock and roll band, a church musician, a classical choral singer, and a jazz vocalist in a variety of settings.
Inspiration
Muriel is now moving from a focus on performance to a concentration on songwriting. She draws upon her background as a vocalist to create songs you love to sing. As you listen, you can hear the range of Joni Mitchell, the grit of Bonnie Raitt, and the beauty of Nanci Griffith. Sprinkled in are the flavors of Tracy Chapman and the harmonies of the Indigo Girls. She is inspired by the work of Rodney Crowell, Dar Williams, Patty Larkin, and Matraca Berg. She likes to listen to bands like Bare Naked Ladies and Cake because of their fabulous lyrics.
